ABOUT THE FARMERS:

The Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia's largest, spans over 110,000 square miles and is home to 35 million people. It borders Kenya to the south and South Sudan to the west, encompassing Addis Ababa and 65% of Ethiopia's coffee-growing territory, including renowned regions like Jimma, Illubabor, Harar, Arsi, and the Guji Zone. The Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (OCFCU), formed in 1999 by 34 cooperatives, has grown to support over 400,000 households, making it the largest farmer union in Ethiopia. OCFCU channels coffee export premiums back to farmers, funds organic farming initiatives, mill equipment purchases, and food security programs. Additionally, it operates a central cupping lab for quality control and is a founding shareholder in the Cooperative Bank of Oromia, providing pre-harvest financing and crop insurance, historically inaccessible to rural Ethiopian farmers. Fairtrade and Organic certified since 2002, OCFCU stands as one of the world's major suppliers of Fairtrade coffee.
